Elena Conti

Elena Conti is a biochemist and structural biologist whose research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of eukaryotic RNA metabolism and quality control. She studied chemistry at the University of Pavia in Italy and received her Ph.D. from Imperial College London in 1996. Following postdoctoral research at Rockefeller University on nuclear protein import, she established her own group at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg in 1999. Since 2007, she has been a Director and Scientific Member at the Max Planck Institute of Biochemistry in Munich. Her research has provided important insights into how mRNA maturation and export are coordinated with RNA surveillance and turnover, particularly the mechanisms of RNA degradation by the exosome complex and nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. Her group integrates complementary approaches to investigate these processes across molecular, structural and cellular scales. She is an elected member of EMBO and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (IT), a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (UK), and an International Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (US).
