Dik van Gent's main interest is in developing functional tests for anti-cancer therapies using tissue explants. His team developed culture conditions to grow precision-cut slices of breast, lung and head-and-neck tumours. They developed protocols to study chemotherapy, radiotherapy and targeted therapy effects. He is currently optimizing cancer-on-chip culture systems to allow live microscopic imaging of these tissue explants in a perfused microscope slide format. The final goal of these endeavours is a screening platform that can be used to assess personalized therapy response using biopsy-sized tissue specimens.
