Manuel Leonetti, Chan Zuckerberg Biohub San Francisco, USA
Manu Leonetti is the Senior Director of Systems Biology at Biohub San Francisco, where he leads interdisciplinary efforts to understand, predict, and ultimately control cellular behavior. His research combines functional genomics, quantitative imaging, proteomics, and AI/ML to uncover the molecular principles that organize cellular states and govern their transitions. His team developed OpenCell, a proteome-scale map of protein localization and interactions in human cells, and has pioneered scalable approaches to spatial proteomics, genome engineering, and high-throughput cellular phenotyping. His current work integrates live-cell imaging, multi-modal perturbation screening, and predictive modeling to learn the rules by which cells transition between states—and ultimately to make those transitions programmable.
Leonetti received his Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University, where he trained with Roderick MacKinnon studying the structural and functional mechanisms of ion channels, and completed his postdoctoral training with Jonathan Weissman at UCSF, where he developed scalable CRISPR-based genome engineering technologies for human cells.
