Ilaria is the lead editor of Trends Open. With a background in biology, she has research interests spanning a wide array of techniques and fields, from plant to life and health science. She received her PhD in molecular medicine from Sapienza University of Rome, where she studied the role of sirtuins in autophagy and cellular stress. She then moved to the Amsterdam UMC-VU in the Netherlands as a postdoctoral fellow, investigating the drug resistance patterns of pancreatic cancer, focusing on microbiome and cell mechanics. She joined Elsevier in 2018, serving as managing editor for Data in Brief, an open access journal dedicated to sharing FAIR data generated in many fields. She became the editor of Trends in Cell Biology in 2020, curating the highest quality commentaries and reviews.
