Laura Newman

Laura Newman completed her undergraduate education at Indiana University and her graduate studies under the mentorship of Rick Kahn at Emory University, where she studied ARL2, an ARF family GTPase that localizes to mitochondria, and discovered that ARL2 regulates mitochondrial morphology. For her postdoctoral work, she joined Gerry Shadel’s lab at the Salk Institute, where she discovered a new pathway describing the release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) from mitochondria into the cytoplasm. Laura is now an assistant professor in the Department of Cel Biology at the UVA School of Medicine and launched her own lab in January of 2024, where she continues to study the cell biology underlying mitochondrial stress signaling and innate immunity.
