Thijn Brummelkamp, Netherlands Cancer Institute, Netherlands
Thijn Brummelkamp is Director of Research at the Netherlands Cancer Institute. He uses human-cell genetics to uncover genes and pathways involved in disease. During his Ph.D., he developed shRNA tools for long-term gene inhibition and performed the first RNAi screen in human cells, revealing a role for the CYLD tumor suppressor gene. His lab later established haploid human cells as a genetic model, identifying host factors for pathogens, including NPC1 as the Ebola virus entry receptor. More recently, his work has uncovered missing enzymes and alternative pathways in actin maturation, microtubule modification, triglyceride synthesis, transcriptional activation, and p53-independent cancer cell death.
