Prof. Ní Chonghaile is an Associate Professor at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. She joined RCSI following the completion of a postdoc with Prof. Letai at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School. Currently, she leads the Targeted Therapeutics in Cancer research group which focuses on cell death signalling, particularly on the BCL-2 family of proteins in mitochondrial apoptosis. Her team discovered a novel histone deacetylase 6 inhibitor, revealing its role in tumour cell glycolysis (patents filed in the US and UK). She has mentored five PhD students and eight postdocs, with four postdocs transitioning to independent research roles. Her research has had direct clinical relevance, with patient case reports on responses to BCL-2 inhibitor venetoclax in leukaemia.
