Kang Shen is the Frank Lee and Carol Hall Professor of Biology and Pathology at Stanford University, where he also serves as the Vincent V.C. Woo Director of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. He earned his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience from Duke University (1999), followed by postdoctoral training in the Department of Anatomy at the University of California, San Francisco. He joined Stanford's Department of Biology in 2003. Shen's laboratory studies the molecular mechanisms governing synapse formation, dendrite development, and neuronal polarity, largely using C. elegans as a model system. He has been a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator since 2008 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2025 and as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His earlier honors include the Searle Scholar Award, the Human Frontier Science Program Young Investigator Award, the Keck Distinguished Young Investigator Award, and the March of Dimes Basil O'Connor Award.
