Bailong Xiao

Dr. Bailong Xiao is a Professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Tsinghua University and a New Cornerstone Investigator. He obtained his B.S. degree from the Sun Yat-Sen University in China in 2001, and did his PhD study in the University of Calgary in Canada with Dr. Wayne Chen from 2001 to 2006. From 2007 to 2012, he conducted his postdoctoral training with the 2021 Nobel Laureate Dr. Ardem Patapoutian at the Scripps Research Institute in the United States, where he made contributions to the establishment of the mechanically activated PIEZO channel family. After joining the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Tsinghua University in 2013 as an Assistant Professor, he has established a multidisciplinary research program to advance the understanding of the structure-function relationships as well as physiological and pharmacological regulations of PIEZO channels, and made key contributions in uncovering how PIEZO channels effectively convert mechanical forces into cation permeation, and consequently fulfilling their versatile mechanotransduction function in a broad spectrum of physiological and pathophysiological processes. His work has been published in high impact journals such as Nature, Neuron, Nature Reviews Molecular and Cell Biology, and broadly recognized. For instance, some of his research work have been cited by the 2021 Nobel Assembly in Physiology or Medicine to introduce the discovery and study of PIEZO channels, and cited into the textbooks of Principles of Neural Science (6th edition, 2021) edited by the Nobel Laureate Dr Eric Kandel, and Principals of Neurobiology (2nd edition, 2021) edited by Dr Liqun Luo at Standford University.
